Cross compiling to 6502 8-bit systems with 'cc65'
presented by Bill Kendrick, New Breed Software
cc65 is a complete cross development package for 6502 & 65C02 systems,
including a powerful macro assembler, a C compiler, linker, librarian
and several other tools. cc65 has C and runtime library support for
Commodores (VIC20, C16, Plus/4, 64, 128 and more), Apple (II+ and later),
Atari 8-bits (400/800/XL/XE computers and 5200 game console),
Nintendo Entertainment System game console, and Atari Lynx handheld
game system.
cc65 started out as a C compiler adapted for the Atari 8-bit line of
computers in the late 1980s. In 1999 it was adapted to run on modern
systems, with the original goal of creating a C compiler for Commodore
computers. Today it is open source (zlib license) and officially
supports Linux, Windows, MSDOS and OS/2, but is highly portable.
In this talk, Bill will discuss the cc65 basics that he's learned
(slowly, in the two years since LUGOD's "Vintage Computers and Linux
roundtable" meeting), specifically related to using cc65 to produce
software on the powerful Atari computer series.
Topics will include: disk image creation and testing via an emulator,
memory management, redefined character sets (fonts and tile graphics),
direct access to hardware registers (custom chipset),
Vertical Blank Interrupts (VBI) and Display List Interrupts (DLI) in
C for graphics and other uses, and more.
About the speaker:
Bill Kendrick has owned Atari 8-bit computers since his childhood,
and still occasionally writes software (mostly games) for the system,
usually in TurboBASIC XL (an ehnancement over Atari's own BASIC)
or Action!, a high-level language with a one-pass compiler.

The Dark Art of Container Monitoring
presented by Gianluca Borello, Sr. Engineer, sysdig cloud
Containers are revolutionizing the way we deploy and maintain our
infrastructures, but monitoring and troubleshooting in a containerized
environment can still be painful and impractical. Understanding
even basic resource usage is difficult - let alone tracking network
connections or malicious activity. This talk will cover the current
state of the art for container monitoring and visibility, including
pros / cons and live demonstrations of each method. Special emphasis will
be put on sysdig, an open source troubleshooting tool the presenter
has helped develop. Sysdig offers unprecedented container visibility
without the need to break the 'sanctity' of the container.

Gianluca Borello is a Senior Engineer at Sysdig Cloud, where he wears
many hats. He's a core developer of the sysdig troubleshooting tool,
and spends his days dealing with backend development, performance
analysis and cloud infrastructures management. Prior to Sysdig,
he worked at Riverbed and CACE Technologies, the company behind
Wireshark. He's passionate about Linux, open source technologies and
distributed systems at scale. He holds a MS in Computer Engineering
from Politecnico di Torino, Italy.

Just a quick note to say that we've decided to sync up our monthly San
Francisco Ubuntu Hour with the 2nd Wednesday of the month date of the
Bay Area Debian Meeting, to offer an evening of Ubuntu and Debian

Some MySQL tricks -- an open discussion
presented by Bill Kendrick, CTO, Smashwords, Inc.
MySQL is the world's most widely used open source relational database
management system (RDBMS), and second most used of all RDBMSes, after
Oracle. Over the years at Smashwords, we've come up with a number of
methods to help address performance problems, including materialized
views, caching, slave databases, denormalization, historical tables,
and more.
This talk will briefly discuss some of these things, but since MySQL
is 20 years old, and SQL in general first appeared over 40 years ago,
the topic is quite large. Therefore, this meeting will be held as an
open discussion, with the audience invited to share their thoughts
and experience on the subject!

Bill Kendrick is CTO of Smashwords, Inc. an online ebook publishing
and distribution service. He spends a lot of his time at the mysql>
prompt, but makes no claim at expertise.

Sandstorm is an open source package manager for web apps, and it runs on
Linux systems. It makes it easy to start up Etherpad (or any other packaged
app) with a click. You can read more + try the demo here:

Security-wise, it takes the Google Docs sharing model and applies it to
entire app instances, resulting in web apps that are private by default,
insulating you from app bugs. Usability-wise, it takes 120 seconds to
install and automatically updates itself.

This meetup features a talk about the Sandstorm app permissions & sharing
model (which for security nerds, is based on object-capability security) by

Systemd: The Modern Linux init System You Will Learn to Love
presented by Alison Chaiken
The controversial "systemd" -- a suite of system management daemons,
libraries, and utilities designed as a central management and
configuration platform for the Linux computer operating system --
has absorbed "udev", and purported to replace "syslog" with the
"journal" daemon.
Recent decisions by Debian and Ubuntu to adopt "systemd" assure its
prominence as a Linux init system. Users and sysadmins are predictably
horrified. In fact, "systemd" is winning wide acceptance, our speaker
says, because it is simpler, easier to use, and better documented than
its competition. Alison Chaiken will describe how to get started with
systemd, discuss some problems with it, and perform some simple demos.
About the speaker:
Alison Chaiken is a senior software engineer at the Embedded
Software Division of Mentor Graphics, working in embedded Linux and
middleware. She was in the recent past a MeeGo Technical Consultant
at Nokia Mobility Solutions, and describes herself as 'a recovering
physicist', who has computed primarily on Unix since the days of the
VAX 11/750. Before her work at Nokia, she worked on pervasive computing
projects at HP Labs, then moved to Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
to write instrument control and user interface software.
